Neurofeedback is a new therapy technique that has been receiving attention from many news outlets - from peer-reviewed articles to the New York Times. But what exactly is this treatment, and how does it work? Neurofeedback (also called EEG biofeedback) is a therapeutic technique that uses real-time displays of brain activity—most commonly via electroencephalography (EEG)—to teach self-regulation of brain function. It has roots in neuroscience and psychology and is used today to treat a range of conditions. How does neurofeedback really work? Sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brain activity. Brainwaves (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma) are recorded and analyzed in real time under the supervision of the provider. Visual, auditory, or tactile feedback (like a changing graphic or sound) is given based on brain activity. Over repeated sessions, the brain learns to maintain more optimal activity patterns. The brain begins to self-regulate as it learns that certain brain states trigger positive outcomes (like winning a game or hearing music). This is based on principles of operant conditioning—rewarding desired brain states. Neurofeedback works to help manage ADHD, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. It can even help promote relaxation and sleep-conducive rhythms in people who have trouble sleeping. Over multiple sessions, you can painlessly and subconsciously alter your brain's baseline state.
